Samsung Project Moohan, the company’s much-talked-about mixed reality headset, might finally be close to hitting the market. Since its initial reveal last year, news about the device has been limited, but fresh reports from South Korean outlet Newsworks suggest the launch could be just around the corner.

Launch Timeline and Price

According to industry sources, Samsung’s upcoming Unpacked event on September 29th in South Korea will feature Project Moohan. The headset is then expected to launch locally on October 13th, with a global rollout to follow at a later stage.

When it comes to pricing, the device could fall between ₩2.5 million and ₩4 million (about $1,800–$2,900 USD). While that’s cheaper than the Apple Vision Pro, which retails at $3,500, it still places Moohan firmly in the premium, prosumer category.

Key Features and Specs

Samsung Project Moohan is being designed as a direct competitor to Apple’s headset and will be the first mixed reality headset to run on Google’s Android XR operating system.

Leaks suggest it will pack the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, Sony micro-OLED panels, pancake lenses, and automatic interpupillary distance (IPD) adjustment. Advanced features like eye-tracking, hand-tracking, and support for VR controllers are also expected, though the controllers haven’t been shown yet.

Production Plans and Market Strategy

Reports indicate that Samsung aims to ship only around 100,000 units of Project Moohan this year. That’s far less than the 400k–450k unit shipment estimates for Apple’s Vision Pro in 2024.

Analysts believe this smaller production volume suggests Moohan will act as more of a stepping stone toward Samsung’s long-term smart glasses ambitions, rather than an immediate mass-market device.

The Bigger Competition in XR and Smart Glasses

While Samsung has yet to introduce its own smart glasses, other tech giants are already making moves. Google is working on Android XR smart glasses in collaboration with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, while Meta is preparing new smart glasses with a built-in display and a wrist-worn controller.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi has launched its smart glasses in China, and HTC recently released the VIVE Eagle in Taiwan for around $520 USD.

Looking Ahead

Even with its limited production targets, Samsung Project Moohan signals the company’s serious entry into the mixed reality headset space. Positioned as a more affordable rival to the Apple Vision Pro, it highlights Samsung’s vision of expanding into XR devices and eventually into smart glasses, setting the stage for the next big wave of personal tech.
