Along with the launch of the new generation 5 Series, BMW India also launched the CE 04 electric scooter, the new Mini Cooper S, and the Mini Countryman EV. The India-bound BMW 5 Series is a long-wheelbase version, which is also sold in China, making India the second market to receive the LWB variant.

This time, BMW India will only offer a petrol variant, as the demand for diesel cars is dwindling because of India’s 10-year rule, applicable to diesel cars.

However, the German automobile manufacturer BMW has priced the 5 Series LWB at Rs 72.90 lakh. So, let’s see what offerings are available.

Dimensions

This luxury sedan is now the longest (length and wheelbase), widest and the tallest in its segment. It is also longer than the upcoming Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB. That said, it has a length (overall) of 5175mm, a width of 1900mm, a height of 1520mm, and a wheelbase of 3105mm.

For reference, the 5 Series LWB is 145mm longer with a stretched wheelbase of 110 than its standard iteration.

Features

This vehicle has a long list of offerings. As seen in the new-age cars, the new generation 5er also speaks out, as far as the future technology and gizmos are concerned.

But, let’s begin with the exterior. It has a sleek yet sporty design language. Onboard exterior features include LED lights (front and rear) with BMW’s Laser Light technology, standard 18-inch alloy wheels (19-inches are optional), flush-like door handles, embossed ‘5’ badging on BMW’s signature Hoffmeister Kink, and M-sport body kit. The M-oriented designs can be seen on the front and rear bumpers, front grille, ORVMs, alloy wheels, and fenders, to name a few.

As for the interior, it has a dual-screen setup - one for infotainment and another for instrument cluster. Along with that, the dashboard’s design will remind you of its elder sibling, the BMW 7 Series. The design department has kept the interior as subtle and minimalistic as possible.

However, features include a touchscreen infotainment unit, a fully digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting with an Interactive Bar, a Bowers&Wilkins audio system, wireless chargers (front and rear), ventilated seats, a crystal iDrive controller, Adaptive LED Headlights, telematics, an auto HVAC, and so on.

For safety, it has a 360-degree camera, a Level-1 ADAS, automatic parking (Park Assist), disc brakes, traction control, multiple airbags, lane-departure warning, an auto high beam, rain-sensing wipers, brake assist, etc.

Engine

The fully loaded spec in India is the 530Li, which only offers a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 48V mild-hybrid support. This MHEV-based turbo-petrol engine is tuned to release 254bhp and 330Nm of peak torque. This engine makes rear wheels spin via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Competition in India

As mentioned earlier, the new BMW 5 Series LWB is priced at Rs 72.90 lakh. This vehicle is priced exactly as the BMW M340i. These are ex-showroom figures, as of July 2024.

However, the stretched mid-size executive saloon will continue to rival the new-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, and the Volvo S90, to name a few.
