I’ve been tracking the mid-range market closely this month, and we finally have a “clash of the titans” situation. Nothing and Google just dropped their latest contenders, and honestly, the choice between them isn’t as simple as a spec sheet suggests.

Whether you’re looking for a phone that looks like it’s from the year 2099 or a reliable pocket companion that will last you until 2033, here is what you need to know about the Nothing Phone 4a Pro and the Google Pixel 10a.

The Price Tag

Let’s get the easy part out of the way. Both phones are launching at ₹49,990 for the 8GB RAM and 128GB storage model.

  • Google Pixel 10a: Available right now.

  • Nothing Phone 4a Pro: Pre-orders start March 13, with full shipping on March 27.

The “Brain” Swap: Snapdragon vs. Tensor

This is where things get controversial. I noticed Google made a cheeky move by sticking with the Tensor G4 (the 2025 chip) instead of the newer G5. It’s plenty fast for gaming and daily scrolling, but it feels like a bit of a “copy-paste” from the cheaper Pixel 9a.

On the flip side, the Nothing Phone 4a Pro is leaning into its own ecosystem. While Google gives you the industry-leading Magic Editor and Gemini AI, Nothing is introducing Essential Space. It actually lets you build your own apps directly on your home screen. It’s a geek’s dream, frankly.

Design: Minimalism vs. The Matrix

If you want a phone that blends in, get the Pixel. It’s got lovely rounded corners and comes in some great colors like Lavender and Berry, but it looks like… well, a phone.

The Nothing Phone 4a Pro, however, is a total head-turner. It features the Glyph Matrix (borrowed from the flagship Phone 3).

  • 137 mini-LEDs that are 100% brighter than before.

  • Covers a 57% larger area on the back of the phone.

  • Why it matters: It’s not just for show; these lights act as timers, notification alerts, and even a soft fill-light for photos.

The Camera: Periscope Power?

Google is playing it safe here. You get the same (admittedly great) 48MP main and 13MP ultrawide setup as before. It’s reliable, sharp, and the software processing is “chef’s kiss” levels of good.

But look at Nothing’s bold claim: they’ve packed in a 50MP 3.5x telephoto periscope lens. They’re claiming up to 140x zoom, which is practically unheard of in this price bracket. If that holds up in my testing, it could be a complete game-changer for mid-range photography.

Durability & Longevity

Here is the “boring but important” stuff that might actually determine which one you buy:

  • The Pixel Wins on Updates: Google is promising 7 years of OS updates. This phone will technically be current until Android 23.

  • Nothing Wins on Style, Not Support: You only get 3 years of Android updates (up to Android 19), though they are offering 6 years of security patches.

  • Water Resistance: The Pixel has a full IP68 rating (it can take a proper swim). The Nothing has IP65, meaning it’s great for rain or a quick drop in the bath, but don’t take it scuba diving.

The Early Verdict

If you value longevity and the best AI photo editing on the market, the Pixel 10a is a “no-brainer” purchase. But if you’re bored with how phones look and want that massive periscope zoom, the Nothing Phone 4a Pro is easily the most exciting device I’ve seen this year.
