The idea of a foldable iPhone has been floating around for years, but fresh comments from Samsung Display’s president have given the rumor mill new life. Speaking in Seoul, Lee Chong revealed that Samsung is preparing to mass-produce OLED foldable panels for a major “North American client.” While he didn’t mention Apple by name, many in the industry believe that’s exactly who he’s referring to.
Samsung’s Production Plans
According to Chong, Samsung will begin mass production of 8.6th-generation OLED panels in the third quarter of next year. These panels are said to be more efficient to produce than the current 6th-gen displays, making them better suited for scaling up production. Given Apple’s dominance in North America, analysts are confident that the Cupertino giant is the mystery client.
What the Foldable iPhone Could Look Like
If Apple does step into foldables, it’ll be a late arrival to a space Samsung has led since 2019. But expectations are sky-high. Leaks suggest the foldable iPhone could have a very slim profile—possibly resembling two ultra-thin iPhones stacked together. Apple is reportedly working to keep the device’s thickness under 10mm, which would put it in the same ballpark as Samsung’s own Z Fold 7 at 8.9mm.
Inside, the phone is expected to run on Apple’s next-generation A20 chip, giving it flagship-level performance to match its futuristic design.
When Could It Launch?
Current speculation points to a launch in September 2026, likely as part of the iPhone 18 series event. The foldable iPhone is rumored to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models and a new iPhone Air, while the standard iPhone 18 could arrive a bit later in early 2027.
Premium Pricing Expected
