WhatsApp has launched a new feature called Strict Account Settings to give users stronger defence against serious cyber threats. The messaging app said the update is meant to protect people who face rare but advanced attacks. This New WhatsApp Feature is gradually rolling out to users worldwide this week.
What Strict Account Settings Are
WhatsApp said Strict Account Settings is a lockdown-style mode that applies the toughest privacy defaults to an account. Once switched on, some functions of the app will work in the most restrictive way. The New WhatsApp feature is meant to help users who may be targets of sophisticated cyber attacks, such as journalists or public figures.
To use the New WhatsApp Feature, users can go to Settings > Privacy > Advanced and enable the option. When enabled, WhatsApp will do the following:
- Lock certain account settings at their most private levels.
- Block attachments and media from people not in a user’s contacts.
- Silence calls from unknown or unfamiliar numbers.

Moreover, the company also noted that it uses the Rust programming language to help keep media and messages safe from advanced threats.
Who Might Need It
Most users will remain safe with the app’s standard privacy protections. But people at higher risk like public figures or those who believe they may be personally targeted, might find the stricter rules helpful.
