WhatsApp is getting ready to show ads in more parts of the app as part of its new monetization plan. According to recent reports, users will soon start seeing promotional content inside Channels and while viewing Status updates. Some users have already spotted these ads, but WhatsApp has made it clear that they will not appear in private chats. All ads will stay limited to the Updates tab only. Meta first confirmed this plan in June, explaining that these ads are meant to help people discover new businesses and connect with them more easily.
WhatsApp Starts Informing Users About Ads in Channels and Status
To be transparent, WhatsApp has begun showing a popup message to some users. This notification explains that ads are coming to Status and Channels but also reassures users that their privacy is fully protected. The company says that personal messages, calls, and private statuses remain end-to-end encrypted and will not be used for advertising. A Gadgets 360 team member also confirmed seeing this notification on Wednesday.
Many users on X have shared screenshots showing these ads, suggesting that more people are starting to receive them. However, it is still unclear whether this rollout is global. If a user taps on an ad, they can directly message the business behind it. WhatsApp also gives users some control: by tapping the three-dot menu, they can view the advertiser’s profile, hide the ad, or report it.
Data Usage and Privacy
When it comes to ad targeting, WhatsApp says it uses only non-personal information. This includes general location (such as city or country), device language, Channels followed, and how users interact with public content or ads.
The company stresses that it does not use personal messages, call logs, or shared locations from private chats to show ads. WhatsApp also says it does not use data like your contact list or your private groups with family and friends for advertising.
