To celebrate its 30th anniversary, Vivo has taken a bold step into immersive tech with the launch of the Vision Discovery Edition mixed reality (MR) headgear. The company says this device has been in the works for four years, with countless tests to make sure it feels light, comfortable, and practical for everyday use.

Compact Design, Comfortable Fit

One of the biggest challenges with MR headgear is comfort, and Vivo seems to have kept that in focus. The headset weighs just 398g, measures 83 mm in height and 40 mm in thickness, making it 26 per cent smaller than many of today’s MR devices.

To ensure it suits different users, the Vision Discovery Edition comes with four sizes of light seals and eight foam padding options. This means even during extended sessions or active movements, it should stay comfortable and secure.

Smarter Interactions with OriginOS Vision

The headset runs on Vivo’s proprietary OriginOS Vision, an operating system designed for natural hand interactions. Instead of the old-school “tap-through-screen” method, the in-built screen lets you use “move-and-pinch” gestures. In practice, this means information appears to float naturally in your surroundings, making the experience more intuitive and futuristic.

High-Precision Tracking and Stunning Visuals

When it comes to tracking, the Vivo Vision Discovery Edition VR headset doesn’t hold back. It includes 1.5-degree high-precision eye-tracking, 26 degrees of freedom in fingertip gesture recognition, and a 175-degree vertical tracking range. All of this makes the controls more fluid and responsive.

For visuals, Dual Micro-OLED screens bring an 8K binocular resolution, along with 94 per cent DCI-P3 colour coverage and DeltaE < 2 colour accuracy. Vivo even carried out binocular brightness and colour consistency calibration to keep brightness differences within ≤2 nits and chromaticity differences under ΔE < 2. The result? Visuals that match professional cinema monitors, while reducing discomfort from eye strain.

Power and Performance

Under the hood, the Vivo Vision MR set uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 21 processor. Compared to the previous generation, this chip promises up to 2.5x GPU performance and 8x AI performance, making sure the visuals and interactions feel smooth and immersive.

Entertainment on a Bigger Scale

The headset is designed for more than just productivity. With support for panoramic viewing, you can watch live sports or e-sports from multiple angles or even use split-screen mode to catch every bit of the action. For movie fans, it can generate a 120-foot theatre screen, turning your living room into a personal cinema.

Like how iPhones can capture spatial videos for Apple’s Vision Pro, Vivo plans to add a similar 3D recording feature for its X100 Ultra and X200 Ultra smartphones, tailored for the Vision Discovery Edition.

Availability

While Vivo hasn’t revealed the price yet, the Vision Discovery Edition will be available for trials at Vivo’s experience centres in several Chinese cities starting August 22. Based on user feedback, the company is expected to roll out a full commercial variant of its Vision series MR headset in the near future.
