After months of speculation, Toyota has officially confirmed that the Land Cruiser FJ will arrive in India by 2028. Positioned below the Fortuner, the new SUV will serve as the entry point into Toyota’s iconic Land Cruiser family.

Unveiled globally at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show, the Land Cruiser FJ has already generated massive buzz among off-road enthusiasts for its retro-inspired looks and rugged appeal.

Made in India, for India and Beyond

Toyota has revealed that the Land Cruiser FJ will not only be launched in India but also manufactured locally. The company aims to produce around 89,000 units per year, with 40,000 of those earmarked for export, primarily to Middle Eastern markets — a region where the Land Cruiser name enjoys a cult following.

In India, the FJ is expected to be priced around ₹30 lakh, slotting just below the Fortuner. By heavily localising production, Toyota aims to keep the costs competitive and make the FJ one of the most affordable off-road lifestyle SUVs in its segment.

Once launched, it will compete with the Mahindra Scorpio-N 4X4, Maruti Suzuki Jimny, and Force Gurkha, bringing Toyota’s global off-road DNA to a broader Indian audience.

Platform and Engine Details

Staying true to its roots, the Land Cruiser FJ will use Toyota’s IMV ladder-frame platform, which also underpins the Fortuner, Innova Crysta, and Hilux. This body-on-frame construction ensures durability, strength, and serious off-road capability — hallmarks of every Land Cruiser.

Initially, the FJ will be powered by Toyota’s tried-and-tested 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine (2TR-FE), producing 163 PS and 246 Nm of torque. It will be paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and a part-time 4WD system, offering solid off-road performance.

Toyota is also planning hybrid versions of the FJ — a strong-hybrid petrol and even a plug-in hybrid variant — to make the model more future-ready as emission standards become stricter worldwide.

Dimensions and Design

The Land Cruiser FJ will measure 4,574mm in length, 1,855mm in width, and 1,960mm in height, with a 2,580mm wheelbase and 215mm ground clearance. This makes it shorter and more compact than the Fortuner, but still big enough to command a strong road presence.

On the outside, the SUV embraces a retro-modern design, featuring:

  • Round LED headlights with DRLs

  • Bold Toyota lettering on the grille

  • Chunky black cladding and silver skid plates

  • Short overhangs for better off-road angles

  • Roof rails, side steps, and square wheel arches

  • And the signature tailgate-mounted spare wheel — a nod to classic Land Cruiser styling.

Interior and Features

Inside, the Land Cruiser FJ will offer a two-row, five-seater layout, focusing on space and comfort. Key features include a 12.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster, sunroof, automatic climate control, and several convenience and safety features expected from a modern Toyota SUV.

The Big Picture

With the Land Cruiser FJ, Toyota aims to bring its legendary off-road heritage to a more accessible price point. By manufacturing it locally and offering both petrol and hybrid options, Toyota is clearly preparing for a long-term play in India’s growing adventure SUV segment.

If priced right, the Land Cruiser FJ could become one of the most desirable off-roaders in the country — blending Toyota’s reliability with the rugged charm of the Land Cruiser nameplate.
