Perplexity has rolled out a major update for its Comet Assistant, taking it several steps closer to being a full-fledged digital co-worker rather than just a chat-based AI helper. The company says the new version can now handle complex, multi-site workflows and even work across multiple browser tabs in parallel, making it far more capable for real-world online tasks.
Smarter, Multi-Tab Functionality
In a detailed blog post, Perplexity explained that the biggest change lies in how Comet Assistant now operates across several tabs at once. This means it can, for example, gather information from one website and seamlessly use that data on another — all without constant human input.
So, if you need to fill a spreadsheet with data pulled from different websites, Comet can now do it automatically by jumping between tabs, reading content, and organizing the results — something that previously required you to guide it step-by-step.
Better Handling of Long, Multi-Step Tasks
Perplexity has also improved how Comet handles longer, more complex tasks. According to the company, internal testing shows that the upgraded assistant performs 23% better than the previous version in tasks that require several sequential steps.
That improvement opens the door for practical use cases like:
-
Searching LinkedIn for specific job roles and summarizing results
-
Comparing flight prices across different booking sites
-
Creating and updating Google Sheets for expense or data tracking
The key advantage is that Comet can now stay on track during these multi-step processes without losing context or progress halfway through.
Smarter Web Navigation and More User Control
The update also enhances Comet’s ability to understand and navigate complex websites, helping it make sense of different layouts, buttons, and forms. That makes it far more reliable across varied platforms — whether it’s shopping sites, data dashboards, or social media.
At the same time, Perplexity has introduced tighter user control over what the assistant can do. Comet now asks for permission before performing browser-level actions like clicking buttons or entering text. Once you give permission, it remembers your preferences during that task, so you don’t have to keep approving every move.
More Than Just a Q&A Assistant
With these upgrades, Comet Assistant is evolving beyond being a simple AI that answers questions. It’s now positioned as a hands-on digital collaborator that can actually perform and manage online workflows — from research and data entry to comparisons and report generation.
By cutting down on repetitive clicks and manual input, Perplexity’s latest version of Comet aims to help users complete everyday digital tasks faster and more efficiently, turning web browsing into something much closer to automation.
