OpenAI is doubling down on its focus on India. On Tuesday, October 28, the company announced that its ChatGPT Go subscription plan will be made available completely free for all users in India for one year, beginning November 4.
The announcement isn’t just about free access — it’s also symbolic. The date coincides with OpenAI’s first-ever DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru, highlighting just how important India has become as one of ChatGPT’s largest and fastest-growing markets worldwide.
What is ChatGPT Go?
Launched earlier this year, ChatGPT Go was designed as a budget-friendly tier after Indian users called for a more affordable way to access premium ChatGPT features. Positioned between the free plan and the premium ChatGPT Plus, it runs on OpenAI’s latest model, GPT-5, and unlocks advanced tools for everyday use.
With the free one-year offer, Indian users will now get:

Why India?
The Go plan’s India launch back in August was a big success. Within just one month, OpenAI reported that paid subscriptions in the country more than doubled, proving there’s strong demand for enhanced AI services at accessible price points.
Encouraged by this response, OpenAI quickly rolled out ChatGPT Go to around 90 markets globally. But with this latest decision, India is the only country getting a full year of free access, reinforcing the company’s “India-first” approach and its intent to grow deeper roots in the region’s booming AI community.
