OpenAI has clarified that it is not testing advertisements on ChatGPT. The statement comes after some users reported seeing what looked like promotional content. However, the company confirmed that no live ad experiments are happening in its AI chat service.
All of this started when “Benjamin De Kraker,” a ChatGPT user, shared a screenshot showing app suggestions and shopping prompts. Many assumed these were ads that seemed to be distracting elements. In response to all this, OpenAI said these were not ads. They were just suggestions for apps that ChatGPT thought might be helpful and the company was only testing this feature.

Responding to the confusion, Nick Turely, Head of ChatGPT, clarified on X,
I’m seeing lots of confusion about ads rumors in ChatGPT. There are no live tests for ads – any screenshots you’ve seen are either not real or not ads. If we do pursue ads, we’ll take a thoughtful approach. People trust ChatGPT and anything we do will be designed to respect that.
Did OpenAI pause the App Suggestions Feature?
Yes, OpenAI has paused the feature to protect the user experience. The organisation said it wants users to feel confident that ChatGPT is ad-free. Officials added that any future app integrations will give users control over suggestions.
The company is also focused on improving ChatGPT’s core performance. This pause allows OpenAI to test new features without confusion.
What does this mean for ChatGPT Users?
Users can continue using the platform without worrying about unwanted promotions as ChatGPT remains free of advertisements. OpenAI’s decision shows the importance of transparency in AI services. The organisation may bring back app suggestions later, but users will have the choice to disable them.
OpenAI clarified that ChatGPT is not testing ads. The temporary app suggestions confused but are now paused. Users can expect an ad-free experience for the moment.
