OpenAI is reportedly teaming up with LoveFrom to develop a range of AI-powered hardware products, with a smart speaker expected to be the first. The project is being led by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Jony Ive, the former Apple design chief and LoveFrom Founder. Alongside the speaker, the companies are also exploring smart glasses and an AI digital recorder, though an AI Pin is also being discussed—even if Ive is said to be less enthusiastic about it.
A Broader Hardware Push
According to The Information, cited by The Verge, OpenAI’s hardware plans are ambitious. Sam Altman previously suggested that one of these devices could become the “third core device people keep on their desk, after a MacBook Pro and an iPhone.” Reports now indicate that the smart speaker and an AI digital recorder are among the first products in development.
While details are scarce, early timelines suggest that none of these devices will launch before late 2026, meaning they are likely still in the concept stage. Interestingly, both smart glasses and the AI Pin had been ruled out by Altman in the past, and Jony Ive himself has voiced skepticism about the pin concept.
Looking to Apple’s Supply Chain
To bring these devices to life, OpenAI is said to be tapping into Apple’s manufacturing network. The ChatGPT maker has reportedly signed an agreement with Luxshare, which already produces iPhones and AirPods, and has also approached Goertek, a supplier involved in building HomePods and Apple Watches.
Drawing Talent from Apple
The collaboration between OpenAI and LoveFrom has also sparked a wave of talent moves. Sources claim that several Apple employees have already switched over. Tang Tan, now Chief Hardware Officer at OpenAI, has reportedly been encouraging Apple staff by promising “less bureaucracy and more collaboration” at his company.
