Instagram is experimenting with a new feature that could give people more say in what shows up on their feeds. Announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri in a Threads post, the update is currently being tested with a small group of users.
More Power Over Your Feed
The feature introduces a way for users to “tune” the algorithm by picking topics that interest them. For example, if someone wants to see more travel content and less lifestyle posts, they’ll soon be able to set those preferences. The test is starting with Reels, but Instagram plans to bring it to the Explore page as well.
How It Works
Instead of depending solely on Instagram’s automated systems, this new option lets people manually influence their recommendations. It’s designed to give users a more personalized experience, whether they’re passionate about tech, food, fashion, or any other niche.
Building Transparency and Trust
This move is part of Instagram’s ongoing effort to make its recommendation engine more transparent and user-friendly. Over the past year, the platform has added tools to limit sensitive content, strengthen parental controls, and allow users to hide posts they don’t find relevant.
For now, Instagram hasn’t shared when the feature will roll out more widely or who exactly is included in the current test. But if successful, it could mean a future where scrolling feels a lot more in tune with your actual interests.
