MediaTek officially expanded its processor lineup on Tuesday with the release of the Dimensity 7100. Listed quietly on the company’s site, this new chip isn’t trying to break speed records for flagship devices. Instead, it is designed to bring better battery efficiency and smoother performance to the mid-range smartphones that most consumers actually buy.
While no phone manufacturers have announced devices with this chip yet, it sets the stage for the next wave of affordable 5G handsets.
What’s Inside the Chip?
The Dimensity 7100 is built on a 6nm process. While that isn’t the cutting-edge technology found in premium $1,000 phones, it is a proven standard that balances cost with performance.
For raw power, MediaTek stuck with a reliable formula. The chip uses an octa-core CPU setup: four “big” Cortex-A78 cores running at 2.4GHz for heavy tasks, and four “little” Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0GHz to handle background apps and save power.
Gamers on a budget might see a small boost, too. The chip includes a Mali-G610 graphics unit, which MediaTek says is about 8% faster than the older Dimensity 7050.
Smarter 5G and Connectivity
One of the biggest drains on a phone’s battery is a constant 5G connection. To fix this, the Dimensity 7100 uses a new modem equipped with “UltraSave 3.0+” technology. In simple terms, this helps the phone manage data transmission more intelligently, reducing energy consumption even when you are browsing on high-speed networks.
The chip supports download speeds up to 3.3Gbps. It also comes ready for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4, ensuring that these future budget phones won’t struggle with slow home internet or connection drops with wireless earbuds.
Sharper Screens and Cameras
Even though this is a mid-range chip, it supports some high-end hardware. Phone makers using the Dimensity 7100 can include cameras up to 200 megapixels, allowing for highly detailed shots.
On the display side, the chip supports refresh rates up to 120Hz. This means scrolling through social media or navigating menus will look fluid and stutter-free. It also handles HDR video playback, so colors in movies and clips will look richer and more vibrant on compatible screens.
