Google has started rolling out the first update to Android 16 QPR1, and it comes with the October security patch for Pixel devices. Interestingly, this month’s patch doesn’t bring any major security vulnerability fixes. Instead, the focus is on ironing out platform bugs and stability issues that have been affecting Pixel users.
Which Devices Are Getting the Update?
The update is rolling out to a wide range of Pixel models, from the Pixel 7 series all the way up to the latest Pixel 10 series, along with the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold.
Notably, the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, and 6a are sitting out this round and won’t be receiving the update. Eligible devices will see new build numbers depending on region, including special builds for Japan.
Key Fixes in the October Patch
Here’s a look at what’s been fixed in this release:
-
Display & Graphics
-
On the Pixel 7, 7 Pro, and 7a, Google fixed an annoying issue where the screen would sometimes flicker or even cause sudden shutdowns.
-
On the Pixel 10 series, the update resolves a bug that could leave the display frozen or fuzzy at times.
-
-
System Stability
-
For the Pixel Tablet, a problem that caused occasional system instability has been addressed.
-
-
User Interface
-
On all Pixels from the Pixel 7 series onward, the patch fixes a bug where a semi-transparent background would linger after using the camera.
-
On the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 series, the flashlight status now correctly appears in the “At a Glance” widget.
-
A fix has also been added for System UI crashes when using the media output switcher for casting on all devices from the Pixel 7 series and newer.
-
The Bottom Line
While the October Android 16 QPR1 update doesn’t introduce flashy new features, it tackles some long-standing stability and UI issues that many Pixel users have been facing. If you own a Pixel 7 or newer device, it’s worth installing the patch to make your phone feel smoother and more reliable.
