Following its rollout on smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and Workspace apps, Google is now bringing its Gemini assistant to the Google TV ecosystem. This move marks one of the biggest upgrades yet for the smart television platform, as the AI-powered tool steps in to replace Google Assistant. While it carries forward all the familiar features of the old assistant, Gemini also introduces a host of new AI-driven functions designed to make content discovery and user interaction far more intuitive.
Smarter Content Discovery and Search
One of the biggest changes with Gemini is how it helps you find something to watch. Instead of endless scrolling, the assistant can now recommend movies, shows, and web series based on your mood or preferred genre. Planning a family or group movie night? Gemini can even merge requests — say one person wants comedy and another wants drama — and suggest titles that mix both.
Search has also become smarter. You don’t need the exact name of a movie or show anymore. The AI understands natural language and vague descriptions, so a query like “that sci-fi movie with robots in space” will still get you relevant results. On top of that, Gemini can provide quick recaps of earlier seasons before you jump into a new one, and you can even ask follow-up questions about reviews, cast details, or other background info.
Availability and Rollout Timeline
For now, Gemini’s integration with Google TV is limited to the newly launched TCL QM9K series. But this is just the beginning. By the end of the year, the AI assistant will make its way to more devices, including the Google TV Streamer, Walmart onn. 4K Pro, and select 2025 Hisense and TCL models like the U7, U8, UX, QM7K, QM8K, and X11K. Older devices are expected to get the update later, though Google hasn’t provided a specific timeline.
Learning Beyond Entertainment
Gemini isn’t just about watching shows or movies. It also turns your TV into a learning hub. Curious about a new recipe, a DIY project, or a skill you’ve always wanted to try? Just ask, and the assistant will automatically pull up relevant YouTube tutorials right on the big screen. This makes learning as simple as watching your favorite series, removing the need to search manually.
By replacing Google Assistant with Gemini, Google is transforming Google TV into something more than a content hub. From smarter recommendations to conversational search and even interactive learning, this AI upgrade is set to make TVs feel more personal and helpful than ever before.
