Google has announced new extended support programs for select Pixel 9 series smartphones after identifying hardware problems that could affect performance. The company says the initiative will help affected users get free repairs or, in some cases, a full device replacement. The program covers the Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, though availability and repair options will differ depending on the region.

Free Display Repairs for Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL

As per Google’s support page published on December 8, an Extended Repair Program has been introduced for the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL.

Here’s what qualifies:

  • Pixel 9 Pro XL: Eligible if the screen shows a vertical line running from top to bottom.

  • Pixel 9 Pro: Eligible if the display shows flickering issues.

If the device meets the criteria, Google will replace the display free of cost for up to three years from the original purchase date.

Repairs can be done through:

  • Google walk-in service centres

  • Authorized repair partners

  • Online mail-in repair options

A technician will first inspect the phone to confirm eligibility.

Pixel 9 Pro Fold Eligible for Full Device Replacement

For users of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Google is offering something even bigger—a one-time free full device replacement instead of a display repair.

Replacements may be arranged through:

  • Online Google support

  • Google Store locations

  • Walk-in centres that can authorize remote replacements

However, this will vary based on the region and availability.

Exceptions and Important Notes

Not all devices qualify. Phones with:

  • Cracked or broken screens

  • Damaged cover glass

  • Signs of liquid damage

…may be refused service. In such cases, users might need to pay for repairs.

Google may request proof of purchase, and users must be 18+ or complete the process through a parent or guardian.

How Users Should Prepare Their Pixel for Service

Before sending a phone for repair or replacement, Google recommends:

  2. Turning on Repair Mode (if supported)

    • This protects personal data during servicing.

Google confirmed that all approved repairs and replacements will include a 90-day service warranty, subject to local consumer protection laws. Users who have previously paid for repairs that are now covered will receive instructions by email about possible reimbursement.
