With more than 3.5 billion active users, Google Chrome continues to be the world’s most widely used browser, holding nearly 65 per cent of the global market. While users often complain about its heavy RAM usage, Chrome remains popular for its clean interface and wide range of extensions that improve productivity.
Now, Google is giving Chrome a major upgrade by adding its generative Gemini AI assistant directly into the browser.
Gemini AI in Chrome
The new Gemini AI button will appear in the top-right corner of Google Chrome, marked by a star icon. At launch, it will work in English and help users make sense of complex information on any webpage they’re viewing.
Powered by the Gemini 2.5 Pro model, the assistant can handle both text and voice queries, offering context-aware answers and simplifying what’s on screen.
Rollout Plans
Initially, Gemini AI will be available on Mac, Windows, and the Chrome mobile app in the US. Soon after, it will also come to the iOS version of Chrome. Google has confirmed that by the end of 2025, the update will reach more global markets, including India.
Smarter Everyday Tasks
Google also plans to expand Gemini’s role with advanced task-handling features. The idea is to let users ask Chrome to take care of time-consuming chores. For example, Gemini could book a restaurant table, add groceries to an online cart, or even manage basic shopping tasks — with users only needing to approve payment at checkout.
Integration with YouTube and Maps
Through deeper connections with Google services like YouTube and Maps, Gemini will make browsing more useful. Imagine remembering a scene from a video but not the timestamp — users will simply describe the moment, and Gemini will find it instantly.
Security with Gemini Nano
On the safety front, Chrome will also gain Gemini Nano, a lightweight model that runs directly on-device. Its job is to detect suspicious sites and warn users against entering personal details or clicking unsafe links, adding an extra layer of protection while browsing.
