Chinese smartphone makers are moving quickly to take advantage of Apple’s slowdown in rolling out AI features in China. Brands like Honor, Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi are using this moment to strengthen their position in the premium market. Their strategy includes launching new tools that make it easier for iPhone users to switch to their devices or use both ecosystems together more smoothly.

A Window of Opportunity

According to the Financial Times, Apple is struggling to bring its latest AI features to Chinese consumers due to regulatory challenges and rising geopolitical tensions. These delays have created a rare opening for domestic brands to step in and attract high-end buyers.

China’s smartphone market is extremely competitive. Counterpoint Research reports that no brand currently holds more than 20 percent of the market. Apple, which led the market for a long time, has recently fallen behind. Vivo now leads with an 18.5 percent share in Q3 2025, while Apple’s share dropped to 13.6 percent, along with a 2 percent decline in iPhone shipments compared to last year.

Making It Easier to Switch from iPhone

To win over Apple users, Chinese brands are investing heavily in software features that improve device migration.

  • Honor has refreshed its Device Clone app, allowing users to transfer photos, contacts, messages and more simply by scanning a QR code.

  • Oppo is rolling out cross-device tools that let users check iPhone notifications or manage calls directly from their Oppo phones.

  • Xiaomi is expected to push similar features with its upcoming HyperOS 3-powered flagship models.

These upgrades aim to remove the friction that often stops iPhone users from switching to another brand.

AI Tools as a Selling Point

Beyond migration tools, Chinese OEMs are also building unique AI-powered features to differentiate themselves.

  • Oppo’s AI assistants can track expenses using screenshots or offer workout guidance through the camera.

  • Honor includes AI that compares discount coupons across apps or helps users create short-form videos.

These features highlight how local brands are leaning into AI innovation while Apple waits for regulatory approval to bring its own AI capabilities to the Chinese market.

Impact Outside China Still Limited

Despite these strong pushes at home, analysts say Chinese brands have not yet managed to weaken Apple’s dominance in the premium market outside China. Apple still maintains a strong global brand pull, especially in higher-income regions.

As Apple works through its regulatory hurdles, Chinese manufacturers are using this moment to sharpen their products, improve user experience, and try to win over long-time iPhone owners.
