Chinese automaker BYD is broadening its Atto 2 family by introducing a plug-in hybrid version called the Atto 2 DM-i. The “DM-i” stands for Dual Mode-intelligent, BYD’s own hybrid technology that blends electric efficiency with petrol support. The company says this new model is designed to reshape the compact SUV market by offering class-leading performance and range.
Range Claims That Turn Heads
BYD is making bold promises with the Atto 2 DM-i. The hybrid is expected to deliver up to 90 kilometres of pure electric driving range, making it one of the strongest figures in its category. When combining both petrol and electric power, the total driving range could reach an impressive 1,020 kilometres.
However, the company has not yet disclosed detailed specifications about the powertrain, battery type, or charging speeds. What we do know is that there will be two different hybrid variants, each with different battery sizes, meaning not every version will hit the 90-km electric range mark.
Subtle Design Tweaks for the Hybrid
The Atto 2 DM-i will carry some small but noticeable design changes compared to the fully electric models. These include:
-
A larger central front grille
-
Updated lower bumper elements
-
Removal of the side vents on the front wings
-
New badging on the tailgate
BYD will also offer a fresh Midnight Blue paint option, exclusive to the DM-i. Despite these updates, the car keeps its compact 4.31-metre length unchanged.
Launch Timeline and Expected Price
The BYD Atto 2 DM-i is making its European debut this week at the Fleet Europe Days in Luxembourg. A formal media presentation is scheduled for November 2025, with pre-sales expected to open soon after. Deliveries are planned to start in the first quarter of 2026.
Pricing has not yet been revealed. For reference, the fully electric Atto 2 in Germany is priced at €31,990 for the 45.1 kWh version, while the larger 60+ kWh battery variant costs €38,990. The hybrid model is expected to fall somewhere in this range, though exact figures will be confirmed closer to launch.
