I’ve been waiting to see how Nothing would follow up their budget-friendly “a” series, and they just dropped a double whammy. On Thursday in London, the Nothing Phone 4a and 4a Pro officially broke cover, and I have to say, the “Pro” version of a budget phone is a move I didn’t see coming.

If you’re tired of boring glass slabs, these phones are a breath of fresh air. They aren’t just about the transparent look anymore; they’re packing serious hardware that actually challenges the big players.

The Glyph Interface: More Than Just Bling

I noticed Nothing is getting much more granular with their signature lights. The standard 4a gets a new Glyph Bar, but the Pro is the real star here with a “Glyph Matrix.”

  • Phone 4a: 63 mini-LEDs across six zones.

  • Phone 4a Pro: 137 mini-LEDs that can hit a blinding 3,000 nits.

  • Why it matters: It’s not just for show. Use it as a camera countdown, a volume indicator, or even a generative ringtone visualizer. It makes your phone feel alive rather than just a notification tool.

Displays: Brighter Than the Sun?

The screen specs here are frankly ridiculous for the price. Both phones use LTPS Flexible AMOLED panels, but the brightness levels are what caught my eye.

  • Phone 4a: 6.78-inch, 120Hz, and 4,500 nits peak brightness.

  • Phone 4a Pro: 6.83-inch, 144Hz, and a staggering 5,000 nits.

  • Why it matters: Most flagships struggle to hit 3,000 nits. This means even under the direct, harsh Indian summer sun, you’ll be able to read your texts without squinting.

Camera: The “Ultra Zoom” Surprise

I was shocked to see a periscope lens on the base 4a. Usually, that’s reserved for $1,000+ flagships.

  • Main Sensor: 50MP with OIS (Samsung GN9 on the 4a; Sony LYT-700c on the Pro).

  • The Zoom: The 4a hits 70x “Ultra Zoom,” while the Pro reaches 140x.

  • Selfies: Both sport a solid 32MP front shooter.

Performance and Battery

Nothing stuck with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 series, which is the “sweet spot” for most people—plenty of power without the overheating or battery drain of the 8 series.

  • Processor: Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 (4a) / Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 (Pro).

  • Battery: Massive 5,400mAh on both models.

  • Charging: 50W fast charging (0 to 100% in about 64 minutes).

  • Software: Android 16 (Nothing OS 4.1) with a massive six years of security updates.

Pricing and Availability

You won’t have to wait long to grab these on Flipkart. The Phone 4a goes on sale March 13, followed by the Pro on March 27.

Nothing Phone 4a:

  • 8GB/128GB: ₹31,999

  • 12GB/256GB: ₹37,999

Nothing Phone 4a Pro:

  • 8GB/128GB: ₹39,999

  • 12GB/256GB: ₹45,999

The Verdict: Which Should You Buy?

The standard Phone 4a is the clear value king—getting a periscope zoom and a 4,500-nit screen for under ₹32k is unheard of. However, if you’re a mobile gamer or a “spec-head,” the 4a Pro’s 144Hz screen and upgraded Sony sensor are well worth the ₹8,000 jump.

I’m curious—does the 140x zoom on the Pro tempt you, or is the base 4a’s price too good to pass up? Keep an eye out for my full hands-on review coming next week!
