I’ve been watching the luxury MPV space heat up for a while, but what Mercedes-Benz just did is a major first. They’ve taken the DNA of an S-Class and grafted it onto an all-electric van. This morning, they officially pulled the covers off the Mercedes-Benz VLE, a futuristic people-mover that looks like it stepped right off a sci-fi movie set.
It’s built on a brand-new platform called VAN.EA, which is dedicated entirely to electric vans. This matters because, unlike older models that were just converted gas vans, the VLE is optimized for batteries and aerodynamics from the ground up. The result? A drag coefficient of just 0.25Cd, which is as slippery as a Porsche Macan. Whether you’re looking for a high-end family hauler or an executive shuttle, this is arguably the most advanced van ever built.
Design & Display: A Mobile Cinema
I noticed something incredible the moment I looked inside: a massive 31.3-inch 8K retractable screen that folds down from the roof. It’s basically a theater on wheels, complete with an 8-megapixel camera for Zoom calls and a 22-speaker Dolby Atmos system. Up front, you get the MBUX Superscreen that spans the entire dashboard, giving the passenger their own dedicated display to play games or stream YouTube.
The seating is just as clever. Mercedes is introducing “Roll & Go” seats that have built-in wheels, so you can literally wheel them out of the van like luggage instead of breaking your back carrying them.
-
Seating: Configurations for 5 to 8 passengers.
-
Cargo Space: A massive 4,078 liters with the seats removed.
-
Luxury: Grand Comfort seats with massage, pillows, and wireless charging.
Performance & Features: Serious Range and AI
You shouldn’t let the “van” shape fool you—the performance is pure Mercedes. The top-tier VLE 400 4MATIC pushes out 409hp and can hit 100kph in just 6.5 seconds. But the real headline is the range. Thanks to a huge 115kWh battery, you’re looking at a claimed range of over 700km (WLTP).
-
Fast Charging: 800V architecture adds 355km of range in just 15 minutes.
-
Agility: Rear-axle steering gives it a turning circle similar to a small CLA sedan.
-
Smart Tech: The AI assistant now integrates ChatGPT and Google Gemini to help with natural conversations and route planning.
While we are still waiting for a confirmed launch date here in India, the fact that Mercedes just launched the new V-Class at ₹1.40 crore tells me they are very serious about our luxury MPV market. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the VLE making its way to our shores as a high-end EV flagship.
I’ll keep you updated as more details come out, especially regarding the Indian launch and local pricing.
