Apple and Google started the beta rollout of end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging today. This update is a major security fix for those who text between an iPhone and an Android phone. The feature is being rolled out to iOS 26.5 iPhone users and Android users with the updated version of Google Messages app. That means your messages are private as they travel through the network.

Look for the New Lock Icon

This news is big. Your chats are safer if you’ve updated your iPhone to iOS 26.5 or have the latest Google Messages on Android. Now you can send texts without worrying that someone is intercepting them in between.” Honestly, I think we have waited too many years for this day. Look, when you chat with someone on a different phone, you will see a little lock icon. This icon indicates that the chat is fully secured.

When you send a message, your phone turns it into a code, then transmits it. The only person you’re talking to has the key to read that code Not even Google or Apple can see your private jokes or home address. This works just the same as WhatsApp which most of us in India use anyway. This prevents hackers or anyone else snooping on the network from accessing your data. It’s a very simple way to keep your and your friends’ conversations between you.

Check Your Phone Settings to Get the Update

Here are some things you need to do to get this working. First, check if your iPhone has the iOS 26.5 update. On Android, go to the Play Store and make sure Google Messages is updated. Both parties need the privacy features updates to work in the chat. I remember paying for every text message.

I tested this today on my own devices. Both phones must have the update for the lock icon to show up. Look, carriers like Jio, Airtel, and Vi also need to support RCS on their networks. Most big Indian companies already do this, so you should be fine. If you do not see the lock icon yet, just wait for a few days. The rollout happens in stages for different users across the country.

It’s honestly a relief that these two tech giants are finally working together. This takes a lot of stress out of sharing photos and private info for all of us. Now go check your settings, does the update await you? This makes texting nearly as secure as using a private app. This is a great victory for all mobile phone users in India.
