Digital payments company Paytm launched a new feature called Paytm Pocket Money on Monday, May 18, 2026. This new tool allows teens without a bank account to directly make independent UPI payments from their phones. Parents can easily set spending limits and see every transaction in real time. This means that school and college students no longer need to carry physical cash or borrow their parents’ smartphones to pay for small daily expenses.
This new payment system offers great safety features
- Teenagers can make secure UPI payments across millions of merchant shops.
- The system uses the official UPI Circle setup created by the NPCI.
- Parents can track everything using the built-in Paytm Spend Summary tool.
- The app blocks all international payments and cash withdrawals completely.
Look at how it works. The feature relies entirely on the UPI Circle framework that the National Payments Corporation of India brought out. Basically, a parent can link their main bank account to the teenager’s phone as a secondary user. Honestly, this removes the big headache of opening a separate bank account for minor children. This feature works only with savings and current accounts). It will not work with credit cards or wallets. This keeps the money source safe and centralized under parental eye.
Strict rules keep the spending under control
- Individual transactions have a strict upper limit of ₹5,000.
- Teenagers can spend a maximum of ₹15,000 in a single month.
- New accounts can only spend ₹500 in the first 30 minutes.
- The total limit for the first 24 hours stays at ₹5,000.
Security is very tight. I checked the details, and the platform blocks heavy spending right after you turn it on to stop fraud. During the very first half hour, the child cannot spend more than ₹500. Actually, a screen lock or device lock is absolutely compulsory on the teenager’s phone to use this app. Parents can reduce the monthly limit or stop the service instantly by entering their secure UPI PIN on their own device. This is helpful for managing school canteen bills, auto rides, and small grocery shopping.
How to activate Paytm Pocket Money for your children
- Setting up this feature requires a few simple steps on both the parent’s device and the teenager’s smartphone.
- Make sure you update the Paytm app to the latest version on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store before you start.
- Open your Paytm app and tap the ‘To Mobile / Contact’ icon on the home screen.
- Select the ‘Pocket Money’ option from the menu to open the setup assistant.
- Enter the mobile number of your child or choose it directly from your contact list.
- Scan the UPI QR code on the teenager’s phone or type their exact UPI ID.
- Provide the necessary document details of the minor user to verify the profile.
- Set a custom monthly pocket money limit or choose a standard amount from the screen.
- Select your primary bank account and type your secret UPI PIN to send the invite.
- The service starts working immediately after the teenager accepts the invitation link on their own phone.
My Verdict
I feel that Paytm Pocket Money is a highly useful tool for modern Indian families. It gives teenagers a sense of financial independence while keeping parents in total control of the wallet. The strict limits of ₹5,000 per transaction and ₹15,000 per month ensure that kids do not overspend on unnecessary things. It is a smart and safe way to teach children about digital financial habits without any real risk.
