I’ve been watching the charts, and the battle for second place is where the real drama is. For a long time, JSW MG Motor had a firm grip on that spot, but Mahindra just pulled off a massive overtake.
While MG started the year strong, Mahindra’s “multiproduct offensive” finally paid off in March and April. They’ve closed a massive 18,000-unit gap from last year to just about 1,000 units in the first four months of 2026.

Portfolio Power vs. Niche Dominance
This is the classic “all eggs in one basket” scenario. MG is leaning heavily on the Windsor EV, which is a great car, but its sales have remained relatively flat.
Meanwhile, Mahindra is casting a much wider net:

Why it matters: In a developing market like India, having an option for every budget is usually what wins the long game. MG needs their next launch to be a massive hit to reclaim the lead.
The Tata Titan: Still Untouchable?
Let’s be real—while the fight for second is fun to watch, Tata Motors is playing a different game. They sold over 31,000 units in the first four months of this year. To put that in perspective, that is nearly double the sales of Mahindra and MG combined.
With the Punch EV already a hit and the Sierra EV launching this month, Tata isn’t just defending their lead; they’re extending it.
The “Wildcards” are Entering the Chat
Don’t get too comfortable with the current rankings. I’m noticing some serious momentum from the newcomers:

Maruti Suzuki: The eVitara is scaling fast, jumping from 220 to 1,230 units monthly in just one quarter.

VinFast: The Vietnamese challenger is already neck-and-neck with Maruti’s monthly numbers.

The Hyundai Factor: Hyundai just confirmed a localized, mass-market compact EV is coming by FY27. When the Koreans enter the mass-market space, the price wars usually get intense.
The Bottom Line: We are moving away from “EVs as a curiosity” to a full-blown market war. Whether you want a budget city hopper or a luxury electric SUV, your options are about to double.
