Carrying a bulky wallet might soon be a thing of the past. Apple has taken another big step toward a truly wallet-free future by introducing digital driver’s licenses and state IDs inside the Apple Wallet app.

This feature, now live in 10 U.S. states and expanding gradually, lets iPhone and Apple Watch users keep their government-issued ID in the same place as their credit cards, boarding passes, and transit tickets. Backed by facial recognition and DMV approval, these new Apple Wallet IDs are designed to be both secure and convenient. From TSA checkpoints at airports to everyday ID checks, Apple is slowly changing the way Americans use identification.

What Exactly Is Apple’s Digital Driver’s License?

Think of it as carrying your driver’s license or state ID without actually needing the physical card. With the Apple digital ID system, users can upload a verified digital copy straight into the Wallet app.

When asked for ID, instead of digging through your wallet, you simply confirm with Face ID or Touch ID — quick, seamless, and secure.

Where Can You Use It?

At the moment, the feature is mainly useful for airport security and certain business verification checks. For example, at participating TSA checkpoints, you can show your Apple Wallet digital ID for domestic travel within the U.S.

Its scope is still limited today, but Apple has made it clear that this is just the start. Over time, the company plans to expand the feature to more states and more everyday scenarios, making digital IDs more widely accepted.

The idea of leaving your wallet at home and relying only on your iPhone or Apple Watch might have seemed futuristic a few years ago. But with Apple Wallet digital driver’s licenses, that future is quickly becoming reality.

While adoption is still in its early stages, the mix of convenience, facial recognition security, and official DMV approval makes this feature one to watch. As more states and checkpoints come on board, Apple’s push toward a wallet-free future could soon change the way we all carry identity.
