Apple is reportedly gearing up for one of its biggest Mac updates yet, with a full lineup refresh planned around the upcoming M5 chipset. The upgrade is expected to cover the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac mini, and Mac Studio, with the first model possibly arriving as early as the end of 2025.
First in Line: MacBook Pro
According to reports linked to the development of macOS Tahoe, a new Mac with the identifier J704 is in advanced stages of testing. This is widely believed to be the baseline MacBook Pro powered by the M5 chip, since the last M4 model carried the tag J604. The device is said to be running on a custom build of macOS Tahoe 26.0.2.
Other signs also point to an imminent launch: Apple retail channels are reportedly running low on the current MacBook Pro, and a recent FCC filing has surfaced that could correspond to the new machine. All this hints that the first M5 MacBook Pro could break cover before the end of 2025.
What’s Next: MacBook Air and High-End Pro Models
After the entry-level Pro, the focus will shift to the MacBook Air. Internally tagged as J813 (13-inch) and J815 (15-inch), these models are expected to launch in early 2026 and ship with macOS 26.2.
Apple is also said to be working on high-end MacBook Pro variants, featuring the beefier M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. These versions, labeled J714 (14-inch) and J716 (16-inch), are projected to arrive in the first quarter of 2026, running macOS 26.3 out of the box.
Desktop Macs in Mid-2026
The refresh won’t stop with laptops. By summer 2026, Apple is expected to roll out new desktops as well. A redesigned Mac mini (J873s, J873g) and Mac Studio (J775c, J775d) are both in development, reportedly tied to macOS 26.4.
Interestingly, the same software build also makes reference to an iMac (identifier J833ct). While details are scarce, this could indicate that the iMac might also be part of Apple’s M5 overhaul.
