The iPhone 17 range has been a strong success story so far, winning praise from critics and setting sales records in China. But even with this momentum, Apple is already looking ahead to its 2026 launch, where the spotlight could shift to a brand-new device — the much-anticipated iPhone Fold.

Apple’s Sales Ambitions

As reported by Nikkei Asia, Apple has started discussions with suppliers and is considering new production strategies to fast-track the iPhone Fold. Sources suggest the company is forecasting a 10% boost in overall iPhone shipments in 2026, aiming for more than 240 million units.

This figure includes ongoing sales of the iPhone 17 as well as strong demand expected for the iPhone 18 series. Suppliers have reportedly been told to prepare for around 95 million units of the iPhone 18 lineup alone. For comparison, Apple had earlier set a target of 220 million iPhones for 2025.

iPhone Fold as a Growth Driver

The iPhone Fold is seen as a key factor in Apple’s growth plans. The company reportedly expects the excitement around the foldable model to not only create direct demand but also boost interest in the wider iPhone family.

Still, insiders caution that Apple often shares optimistic forecasts to account for supply chain challenges or quality-control risks with new categories. Even so, most believe at least a 5% rise in shipments is achievable.

Pilot Production in Taiwan, Mass Production in India

To prepare for the foldable device, Apple is said to be planning a pilot production line in Taiwan. Sources indicate the company is exploring land in a northern city, though labor shortages could be a hurdle since the project may need about a thousand workers.

Once testing is complete, mass production is expected to shift to India, where Apple continues to expand its manufacturing base. Equipment imports from China remain a challenge, but the company is reportedly working to strengthen its local supplier network and bring in new toolmakers from Taiwan.

What’s Next for iPhone

While Apple has not officially confirmed the iPhone Fold, multiple patents and design reports point to a larger shift in the coming years. With the iPhone Air expected in 2025, many analysts believe 2026 could be the year when the foldable finally makes its debut, setting the stage for a fresh chapter in iPhone design.
