After launching the iPhone Air in September as its thinnest iPhone ever, Apple expected strong interest from buyers. However, new reports suggest that the response has been weaker than anticipated. Because of this, Apple is now said to be reworking its plans for the next version of the phone, which is currently being referred to as the iPhone Air 2.
Leaks indicate that Apple is not only refining the phone’s features but is also adjusting its launch timeline to better match what users actually want.
Camera upgrades and possible price cut
According to a report from The Information, Apple is redesigning the iPhone Air 2 to fix some of the biggest complaints about the original model. One of the main changes could be the camera setup. While the first iPhone Air came with just a single rear camera, the new model is expected to add a second rear camera. This would sit alongside the existing 48 megapixel main sensor, giving users more flexibility while shooting photos.
There are also signs that Apple may rethink the pricing. The first iPhone Air launched at $999 in the US and ₹1,19,900 in India, which many felt was too high for a phone with limited features. To make the iPhone Air 2 more attractive, Apple is reportedly aiming for a lower starting price.
Launch timeline pushed back
The report also claims that development of the iPhone Air 2, internally known as V62, has hit some delays. Apple is said to have canceled a trial production run last month that was meant to prepare the phone for a Fall 2026 launch. Because of this, the release window has now likely moved to Spring 2027.
That said, production work may restart soon. Trial manufacturing could begin again as early as March, with Apple’s partner Luxshare handling the process at its facility in Kunshan, China. This new timeline would place the slim iPhone’s launch separately from Apple’s Pro and foldable iPhone models expected in late 2026.
Why Apple is reworking the Air lineup
The reason behind these changes appears to be the performance of the current iPhone Air. Analysts reportedly consider it the weakest-selling model in the iPhone 17 lineup.
For reference, the existing iPhone Air runs on the A19 Pro chip, features a 6.5 inch ProMotion display, and stands out mainly for its ultra thin 5.6mm body. It also includes an 18 megapixel front camera and a 3,149mAh battery. While the design grabbed attention, it seems that many buyers wanted more features for the price.
Apple now appears to be taking that feedback seriously as it reshapes the future of its slim iPhone lineup.
