Google has started rolling out the final test version of Android 16 QPR1 — also known as the Quarterly Platform Release Beta 3 — to select Pixel smartphones. This update offers a sneak peek at what users can expect from the upcoming stable release, scheduled for September 3, 2025. While some new features have been added to improve usability and productivity, a few others are still missing.

Zoom in On the Keyboard with the New Magnify Feature

One of the key highlights of this beta is the new magnify keyboard option. Found under Settings > Accessibility > Magnification, this tool lets users zoom in on the on-screen keyboard. It’s especially useful for people who use full-screen magnification and want clearer visibility of letters and emojis. This feature was first noticed in an early Android Canary build and now appears ready to make it into the final version of Android 16 QPR1.

Handy Taskbar Shortcuts in Desktop Mode

Another useful addition is the new taskbar shortcut feature in Desktop Mode. Now, when you long-press an app icon either in the taskbar or app drawer, you’ll see options to pin or unpin it from the taskbar. This is helpful for quick multitasking and is available only when using Desktop Mode — whether on an external display or a large-screen tablet.

Still Waiting for These Features

Even though Beta 3 introduces a few helpful tools, some features spotted in earlier Canary builds are still missing. These include:

  • Qi2 screen saver features

  • An enhanced HDR brightness option

  • A new parental controls menu

  • The 90:10 split-screen layout for apps

  • The tablet bubble bar for improved navigation

  • And the option to blur the wallpaper on the lock screen

These features may still be under development or could arrive in a future release.

What to Do If You’re Using the Beta

The stable version of Android 16 QPR1 is expected to go live on September 3, 2025. However, Google may begin rolling out the next beta cycle — QPR2 beta — before that date. If you’re currently enrolled in the beta program and want to switch to the stable version once it’s released, you’ll need to unenroll from the program after getting Beta 3. Otherwise, your device might automatically jump to the next beta track (QPR2) instead of upgrading to the stable build.
